How to use sketch.AR for tracing photos

sketch.AR transforms any image into a traceable AR projection, making it perfect for artists who want to improve their drawing skills or quickly transfer designs to paper.

Getting Started

First, make sure you have a well-lit environment. Good lighting helps the AR tracking work better and makes tracing easier on your eyes.

Step 1: Select Your Image

Open sketch.AR and tap the gallery button to select a photo from your camera roll. You can use:

  • Portrait photos for realistic drawings
  • Line art for practicing clean strokes
  • Complex compositions to study proportions

Step 2: Adjust the Projection

Once your image is loaded, you’ll see it projected in AR space. Use the on-screen controls to:

  • Resize: Pinch to scale the projection to match your paper size
  • Position: Drag to center the image over your drawing surface
  • Opacity: Adjust transparency so you can see both the projection and your paper

Step 3: Start Tracing

Place your paper on a flat surface beneath the projection. Use a pencil to lightly trace the main outlines first, then add details as you become more comfortable.

Tips for Better Results

  1. Start simple: Begin with simple shapes before moving to complex portraits
  2. Use light strokes: Press gently so you can erase mistakes easily
  3. Take breaks: AR tracking works best when your device is steady

Happy drawing!
